Alexa Ranking is a website ranking system that evaluates both country-level and global popularity of a website. It measures website traffic in terms of unique visitors per day received from different IP addresses. Developed by Alexa Internet (an Amazon company, now discontinued as of May 2022), this ranking system primarily measured traffic statistics for Top-Level Domains (TLDs) such as example.com or abcd.com.
Within the SEO community, Alexa Ranking was often used as a secondary metric after analysing a website’s Domain Authority (DA) and Page Authority (PA). It served as an additional benchmark to gauge a website’s strength and competitiveness for SEO strategies. The principle was simple: the lower the Alexa Rank, the higher the traffic a website was presumed to receive.
Since Alexa officially shut down in 2022, SEO professionals in 2025 now rely more on similar alternatives such as:
- Moz Metrics (DA, PA, MozRank, MozTrust)
- Ahrefs Rank (AR)
- SEMrush Traffic Rank
- SimilarWeb Rankings
